Welcome to Canada Connect! Today, we'll be diving into a topic that's essential for International Students like you: navigating Immigration laws in Canada after your arrival. As you settle into your new life, or you might already be settled and are ready to take the next step, understanding the legal aspects of Immigration is vital for a smooth and successful experience. Let's explore some valuable information and insights to help you stay informed and compliant with Canadian Immigration laws.

NOTE THAT MOST OF THE LEGAL PROCESSES IN CANADA CAN BE DONE DIRECTLY BY YOU THROUGH THE OFFICIAL IRCC WEBSITE: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada - Canada.ca

We're thrilled to share from personal experience that majority of these Immigration tasks can be done just by you unless your situation is genuinely exceptional! Embrace the empowering journey of conducting ample research on platforms like YouTube and other websites, which will not only save you unnecessary fees but also ensure that your time is used wisely!

Study Permit

If you plan to continue your studies beyond the expiration date of your current study permit, it's crucial to apply for an extension before it expires. Failing to do so can result in losing your legal status in Canada. Make sure to apply for the study permit well in advance and do not get intimidated even if you do not have a lot of time. Work Permit

If you wish to work in Canada while studying, ensure that you have the appropriate work permit. There are different types of work permits, such as co-op work permits, open work permits and closed work permits, each with specific eligibility criteria. To work off-campus while being a student, ensure that your study permit has the correct requirements/conditions. YouTube - Applying for PGWP

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

Once you have completed your study in Canada, your student visa and study permit gets expired. Now, do not confuse work permit with TRV. If you do not intend to leave Canada, just work permit is fine. But, if you would like to leave Canada and travel Internationally, you need TRV. Be aware that you need to get approved for TRV and have a visa stamped on your passport before leaving Canada. Otherwise, you would not be able to return to Canada.  YouTube - Applying for TRV

Permanent Residence (PR)

The most crazy part of your journey is - PERMANENT RESIDENCE!
Familiarize yourself with the various pathways to permanent residence in Canada. Gather as much information as possible about the current categories, programs, etc. for pathway to PR. Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) are common routes for international students to become permanent residents. Discuss with your friends, consult with Immigration lawyer if needed about what they have to say plus it is very very important to do your research after listening to everybody. Study Permit Conditions

There are important conditions and requirements that need to be mentioned in a study permit. As a study permit holder, you need to meet a number of conditions. If you don’t meet these conditions, you may lose your student status and study permit. You may also have to leave Canada. Check out all the details here: Official Link

Legal Advice

If you have complex immigration matters or uncertainties, seek legal advice from a reputable immigration lawyer or a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC). Do not go to the first lawyer/agent that is suggested by your family or anyone else. Research on your own, ask at your university. Talk with your friends who are at the same stage with you. They might know something you don’t and you may not need to go to an agent after all. Having completed everything by ourselves after coming to Canada all the way to PR, we can confirm that you don’t need an agent in most scenarios.

Resources

Rely on official government resources for accurate information on immigration laws in Canada. The IRCC website (www.canada.ca/immigration) is a reliable source for up-to-date guidelines and applications.

Remember, staying informed about Immigration laws is crucial to maintaining your legal status and achieving your long-term goals in Canada. From the creator

"Over the past five years of my journey as an International student in Canada, I have experienced a rollercoaster of ups and downs in the immigration process. Navigating the complexities of immigration laws and policies can be overwhelming and challenging, leading to moments of uncertainty and frustration. Throughout this time, one crucial lesson I've learned is the importance of conducting my own research while working with immigration matters. Relying solely on others for guidance might not always provide the complete picture or tailored advice for my specific situation. By taking the initiative to research immigration requirements, updates, and potential changes, I have gained a deeper understanding of the process, allowing me to make more informed decisions about my immigration journey. While seeking professional assistance is valuable, being actively involved in my own immigration affairs empowers me to advocate for my interests and ensures that I am well-prepared for any unexpected twists that may come my way. As an international student in Canada, staying informed and proactive in my immigration endeavors has proven to be an invaluable asset, making my experience smoother and more rewarding."”
